Second round of local elections in Moldova

The second round of local elections was held on 19 June in 512 locations across Moldova. According to the information released by the Central Election Commission, based on 100 percent of the Chisinau ballots, Dorin Chirtoaca – Liberal Party candidate, supported by the entire coalition Alliance for European Integration – has been re-elected as mayor of the capital with 50.6 percent of the votes. His opponent – Communists candidate Igor Dodon secured 49.4 percent of the votes.
Meanwhile, on 17 June the court of appeals ordered a re-count of the votes cast in the first round of the municipal elections in Chisinau held on 5 June. The first round was won by the opposition Communist Party, which secured 26 out of the 51 seats on the local council.
