The leader of the Azerbaijani opposition National Statehood Party, Nemat Panahli, has been arrested for two months on hooliganism charges. His defence counsel claims that Panahli has been detained on trumped-up charges, while the real reason for his arrest is his decision to once again engage in political activity. (In the 80s, Panahli was an activist in a nationalist movement but he later left politics. He re-appeared on the Azerbaijani political scene in the run-up to last year’s parliamentary elections. After the ballot, Panahli accused the authorities of rigging the voting process).
