Iran’s ambassador to Azerbaijan has been recalled to Teheran for consultations – the Iranian embassy in Baku announced on 22 May. According to Azerbaijani media, the move was a direct a reaction to the mocking of Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khomeini during a recent demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in Baku. The last few days saw a series of protests outside the embassy against anti-Azerbaijani policies adopted by Iran, seen as a response to earlier demonstrations organised by a group of young Iranians outside the Azerbaijani consular office in Tabriz, where demonstrators mocked Azerbaijani leaders.
